Aug. 5th, 2012 04:18 amA short post, because I'm trying to bitch on Twitter but I cannot be contained in 140 characters, and spamming about my rage is obnoxious to others.
I've spent the day reading a CANON COMPLIANT post-Xmen First Class, pre-trilogy longfic. Note that the tags include 'canon compliant' and 'angst'. As well they should, considering that
1) XMFC ends in two characters questionably in love, at the very least very dependent separating due to violence of the majority, and differences in opinion of how to react to it.
2) the trilogy is 40 years later, and it's clear that it's been 40 years of opposing each other's moves, battling each other
3) Charles is grievously injured in part due to Erik
4) Erik has enough issues for a thousand men.
The fic starts on the premise that a few years after Cuba Erik wants to give peace another try, and defects to Charles and the school.
THIS FIC IS CANON COMPLIANT. MAGNETO DOES NOT WORK AT THE SCHOOL IN THE TRILOGY. X1 came out a decade ago. This is not a spoiler, this should not be a shock. SOOO, that means that by the end of the story Erik will leave the school.
So why are all 25 comments ranting about the fact that it doesn't end with them happily ever after? Seriously, you read 135k of fic, and the author manages to piece together ridiculous timelines and deals deftly with post-Holocaust Judaism, and homosexuality and transgendered children in the 60's, and THE BEST THING YOU HAVE TO SAY IS "why did Erik leave?"
BECAUSE IT'S CANON COMPLIANT. HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE MOVIES? And if you're really reading this fic somehow not knowing what that phrase means, have you also never heard the phrase 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all'? And at the very least, if you are ignorant enough to ignore tags and then get mad when you get something you don't like, when you see the first ten comments are all negative, what's so special about you that you need to leave another?
