A letter to myself, regarding how Avengers is making me a shitty friend.

So, like a good portion of my twitter feed, I am now enamored with Avengers. I'm not too worried about it taking over. Like my complete plethora of will-read pairings in every fandom except the X-Men trilogy, I am very capable of reading a half dozen fandoms at once.

Avengers is currently pressing hard on five of my buttons. 1) people with differences coming together to help more people. 2) superpowers! 3) bromance. 4) kick ass women who will kill everyone for looking at them wrong. 5) snark. (Tony Stark, I love you)

On the other hand it's missing a few staples of my fannish experience. Until they become bigger tropes in the Avengers, it pretty much guarantees I'll be poly-fandom. 1) teenagers. whether high school AU, or actually set during the teen years, I strongly gravitate to teenage minds. 2) kink. I haven't seen a lot yet. 3) poly. If fandom can get on any of those, that would be excellent.

If that was tl;dr, I'll sum it up. I've been kinda bitchy, but I'm gonna try to stop. And I'm sorry to anyone whose feelings I have hurt.

comments

This is the first time I've posted a WIP amnesty. I always save the bits that don't work in the fic and put them in a snippets doc, and write that later. But I just found out that soon Gdocs is going to chance to Gdrive, and that only gives you 5g of free space, and I have no idea how many g of space I'm already using, so. Here are some fic snippets that I will never use.

1) Ray/Gerard au based on Stardance by Spider Robinson. I love the book, but holy shit, I cannot write about dance. I know FUCK ALL about dance.

2) Ray/Mikey Ray gets arthritis.
-So, I was gonna not do BBB. I had just finished werewolfbb, and then I had to go directly to crossover, and the first idea I had just wasn't working at all. So I scraped it and decided to just blackout a few of my old bingo cards. (crossover, Waycest, and Waycest+1, to be specific). BUT. But then I got an idea. An ~idea~. And now it's a mad race against the clock, 20k in 12 days. BECAUSE I CLEARLY MAKE GOOD LIFE CHOICES. Choices that don't ADD TO STRESS LEVELS.

-So there was a twitter convo, and I'm curious.
person 1: How did I forget about how amazingly hot this picture of Frank is? (link to pic)
person 2: You would get NOTHING DONE. If you always remembered that picture.

and before I opened the link I automatically assumed it was that washed out picture of Frank with his skunk hair, with the long drool line from his mouth to his microphone. But then I opened it, and it was a totally different era. So I'm wondering, when you read that, what Frank pic comes to mind? Everyone's got one, I'm sure.

-Touch, you guys. Seriously such a good show. PEOPLE ARE RUBE GOLDBERGS. Everyone affects each other because of ~math~. If it doesn't get a second season I will WEEP.

-I also want Finder to come back. And Mentalist. And I'm sure Criminal Minds will.
So tonight I went to my concert. Finally. I bought my ticket the first day, I woke up at insane o-clock to be online in time. I have been waiting for this in the same way that you wait for a convention.

The opener...confused me. I mean, I totally liked them, enough that I bought their cd after the concert. But when you have the main band as alt-rock, with some ballads, and the opener is femme-metal, ala the Distillers? The general crowd is not going to be happy. One of the guys in front of me literally stood with his hands over his ears the entire set. What manager decided to put two bands together that are completely opposite?

Keeping with the last paragraph, anyone want to write me a fic? The band was a woman with blond viking hair on the drums, and a guitarist/singer. The Drumgirl did all the stage banter. If you could call it banter. It was more like "this is another song we play. We do that a bunch." Also she told a story about eating clam chowder. So basically what I need is AAG!Bob and AAG!Patrick making a band. PLZKTHNX. I will also accept AAG!Spencer and AAG!Ryan, but I'm not sure Ryan can do hardcore, but we know Patrick could because he was an Arma fan. Spencer and Bob can both handle the shrugging snark.

And then Our Lady Peace :D :D :D I'm not gonna bother with a set list, because none of you will care. But I do think it's telling that they did a song from every album except Healthy In Paranoid Times, the cd that caused them to quit Columbia and create their own recording studio. I also think it's telling that some of the "fans" only knew the words to songs like Innocent and Superman's Dead. ie: the singles. If you're going to pay enough to get floor tickets, you should bother to download the cds before hand and learn the fucking songs.

As a side note, the new cd came out the 4th, and from the 4th to the 13th when I left for the concert, the only music I listened to was Curve. Most of the songs have been played a hundred times. What did this accomplish? Well, when 6 of the ten tracks were played, I could sing along. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT REAL FANS DO. THEY MEMORISE THE SONGS.

This is my third time seeing them, and they did something new this time. THEY DID MASH UPS. I keep refreshing youtube hoping to see video loaded (as soon as the crowd realised what was going on they started recording) but nothing yet. Maybe they'll put them out as iTunes singles? I would buy them in a flat second. The first was Thief and All My Friends, the second was Naveed and In Repair.

About halfway through Raine did a stupid thing. He mentioned the Jets. For those of you in hockey fandom, you should recognise it as the team Winnipeg rioted over losing when I was a kid, and blocked the two biggest streets for a shinney game when we found out we were getting them back. He mentioned them, and the crowd started a GO JETS GO chant. It lasted longer than the opening screams when they walked on. MAN, YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU DO.

There were two encores. The first time they came back and did three songs. And then we were all screaming long and loud enough that they came back and did one more. I was a little :( after the three song encore because they hadn't done paper moon, so when Raine shouted into the mic asking if they had a moon graphic to flash I literally just started screaming. And then he tricked me for a sec, because he was like "Neil Young is from Winnipeg, right?" And I sighed because a cover, but whatever. Will listen to anything this man does. But then "Well, we don't have a harvest moon, but we do have a Paper Moon!" And then they started. And then I fucking blew my voice, screaming and crying at the same time. THAT SONG IS MY JAM. If I was a tattoo girl, I'd get the lyrics. The song means a lot to me.

I can't wait until the next time they come! Totally getting floor next time again. I LOVE YOU BAND.

ETA: A tweet: ‏ @MrRaineMaida Go Jets!!! Crazy ass show in the peg tonite. @chantalkreviaz would've been proud of hometown crowd !!! Soooooo loud!!

comments

Sometimes I don't know whether to thank fandom for being awesome and considerate, or scowl at it for scrubbing away the desensitization that built up during my early years of watching tv and reading adult novels.

There are things I read these days that I get all offended that I wasn't warned for.
What comes first, the canon or the fic? It's kinda the new chicken vs egg, at least for me.

See right now I want to watch The OC. I want to watch The OC because I'm reading Seth/Ryan fic. I started reading it after writing a crossover for my "high school AU" square of one of my bingo tables. The OC was the first thing that came to mind because I watched it a long time ago when it first aired, and bought the dvd's of the first three seasons. I started watching the show because a friend of mine got into the fandom really early on, and couldn't stop talking about how there needed to be fic, and how she was writing fic.

Another example: I went to go watch Inception in theatres because everyone was saying it was the slashiest hottest movie ever. I didn't see it, so I read Inception fic so I could understand.

Bandom is another clear example. I read a threesome fic because la_dissonance drew art for it, read it like it was original fic because I didn't know who anyone was, and then I started to do research and realised Carden and Conrad and Spencer were in different bands, but surely there was slash about their bands? And then everything became WAIT, WHO'S GABE? *researches* I LIKE GABE. THIS APPEARS TO BE A GABE/TRAVIS FIC...WHO'S TRAVIS *researches*

I just really like how fandom is so self perpetuating. Every time you experience something you need to read about it. I've found myself looking up fic for fandoms I would never want to write in, like Criminal Minds, and NCIS: LA, and A Series of Unfortunate Events, fandoms where I don't even find anyone sexy, just because I know it exists, and I want to see what others have to say about it. And then reading it makes me want to watch/read/listen to that media all over again, to catch the tiny details the author threw in.

I'm not entirely sure what kind of argument I was trying to make. I just have ~feelings~ about fandom, and how important it is to me.

comments

Not for betaing or anything, just for fangirl opinion/experience.

If you were waiting in line for one of the Danger Days tours, one of the MCR headliner ones, where as far as the eye can see are people dressed as Killjoys, as neat and orderly line as you can get- but then Frank and Gerard just casually walked down the street/sidewalk opposite the side you're on when they are very much not expected...what do you do?

I can see someone shouting out "better stay on this side of the street motherfucker I'll knock you out!" because, well, it fits.
I will not get a 22 dollar day pass for Festival du Voyageur just so I can get some tire d'erable. *repeats like a mantra*

While all the Americans celebrate President's Day tomorrow, for Manitoba it's Louis Riel day. He's this guy that ran the Meti nation (Meti occur when Aboriginals and Francophones fuck), and took on the Anglophone gov a bunch of times when they were fighting over who got Canada. He basically created Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

We celebrate this heritage by having a ten day outdoor festival, in which there are awesome things like beard growing contests and snow sculptures that are 50 feet long and 18 feet high. And concerts, in which everyone moshes in ski pants, because it's February. In Winnipeg. And informational cos-playing. Like for example, DID YOU KNOW that the beaver skin they used to make top hats out of, before they could use it, women had to wear it as underwear to soften it? THAT'S RIGHT, TOPHATS ARE MADE OUT OF FUR PANTIES.

BUT ALSO TRADITIONAL FOODS. Normal stuff, like pancakes and poutine (fries with cheese and gravy), and crepes, and maple sugar pie and tourtiere (meat pie). But most importantly: tire d'erable. You know what that is? That's where you take sap straight out of a maple tree, boil it, and pour it on snow, and quickly jam a stick in it, so when it cools you have hardcore fresh maple taffy on a popsicle stick.

I WANT IT SO FUCKING BAD. But 22 dollars for the entry fee, plus transportation costs, plus the actual tire d'erable cost- one hunk of candy for 35$ seems a bit much.

NEXT FEBRUARY, WHEN I HAVE A JOB YOU WILL BE MINE, TIRE D'ERABLE. I'M COMING FOR YOUUUU.

comments
